Day 1

Quick start leaves DU men in 3rd place in their DI regional; CSU Rams 8th after opening round in theirs; CSU-Pueblo 3rd at DII nationals

By Gary Baines – 5/16/2022

The University of Denver men’s golf team started quickly Monday in the NCAA Division I Regional, sitting in third place out of 14 teams in the Stockton, Calif., tournament.

Not bad for a school seeded 12th coming into the event.

The Pioneers made a tournament-best 24 birdies and fired a 6-under-par 282 as a team, leaving the Summit League champions four strokes behind leader Stanford in the 54-hole event. Carson Griggs led DU individually as his 3-under-par 69 put him in fifth place, a stroke behind the four co-leaders.

Meanwhile, the other Colorado-based team competing at the men’s DI Regionals, Colorado State, shares eighth place in the 13-team Bryan, Texas tournament. Connor Jones of Westminster, the Mountain West Conference individual champion, and Christoph Bleier led the way for the Rams with 1-under-par 71s.

At each regional site, the top five team finishers — and top individual not on those teams — will earn spots in the NCAA national championships, set for May 27-June 1 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
