Not-So-Sweet 16

Stroke play co-medalists Calli Ringsby of Denver and teammate Shannon Aubert see their run end in round of 16 at U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball; 3 local teams made match play at championship

By Gary Baines – 5/16/2023

A day after rallying from a late 3-hole deficit to win a match at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, no fantastic comeback materialized on Tuesday for Denver resident Calli Ringsby and her former Stanford teammate Shannon Aubert.

Ringsby and Aubert, at 27 the oldest pair to make match play in DuPont, Wash., saw their run end in the Four-Ball, as 15-year-old Gianna Clemente of Estero, Fla., and fellow teenager Avery Zweig of McKinney, Texas never trailed in defeating the two former Cardinal teammates, 5 and 4 in the round of 16. (May 17 Update: Clemente and Zweig went on to claim the national title.)

Still, Ringsby and Aubert can look back at this championship as one where they shared stroke-play medalist honors and rallied to win their first match after being 3 down through 14 holes.

On Tuesday, the Ringsby and Aubert team tied the first two holes with pars, but Clemente and Zweig won five of the next nine holes — four with best-ball birdies — to build a large lead they would maintain. In fact, Clemente and Zweig didn’t lost a hole on Tuesday in going 5 under for 14 holes.

Ringsby were the last of three local teams competing in the Four-Ball, all of which advanced to the 32-squad match-play portion of the championship.

Here are the results of all the teams with strong Colorado ties:
