Former Coloradan Parker Edens’ run at U.S. Mid-Amateur ends in quarterfinals for second time in the last 3 years

By Gary Baines – 9/17/2025

Finishing in the top eight out of 264 players at a USGA national championship isn’t too shabby.

To do it twice in three years, that’s all the more impressive.

Parker Edens, who grew up in Greeley and was a player and assistant coach at Colorado State University, has managed just that at the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

After advancing to the quarterfinals in 2023, Edens repeated the feat this week, though the run ended on Wednesday morning for the former pro and two-time Inspirato Colorado Open low amateur.

Jeg Coughlin III of Dublin, Ohio, who later in the day defeated defending champion Evan Beck in the semifinals, beat Edens in the quarterfinals 3 and 2 at Troon Country Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. Coughlin, like Edens a former pro, birdied the first and fourth holes and held a 3-up lead at that point. And Edens, a two-time CGA Four-Ball champion with Jimmy Makloski, would get no closer than 2 down the rest of the way.

Edens, now the head coach of the men’s golf team at South Dakota State, finished 3 over par for 16 holes — with two double bogeys — while Coughlin was 2 over.

Advancing to the quarterfinals makes Edens exempt for the 2026 U.S. Mid-Am, set for Sept. 26-Oct. 2 of next year at Sand Valley Resort in Nekoosa, Wis.

In addition to his two quarterfinal appearances at the U.S. Mid-Am, Edens made it to the round of 16 last year.

The U.S. Mid-Am is limited to players 25 and older.
