18 birdies in 36 holes give Coloradan Connor Jones victory for 2nd straight year in Florida mini-tour event; he beat 2 PGA Tour winners in the process this time

Connor Jones is no stranger to going low in rounds of tournament golf.

To cite a couple of Colorado-based examples, the Westminster resident posted two rounds of 64 at River Valley Ranch in Carbondale en route to finishing a record 24 under par for four days at the 2022 CGA Amateur. He’s also carded a 63 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in the Inspirato Colorado Open.

But taking it low has become a habit for the 2022 CGA Player of the Year at one particular mini-tour event — the Wildwood Open in Wildwood Fla., a tournament on the Florida Professional Golf Tour.

The former Colorado State University standout won the 2025 Wildwood Open by two after rounds of 63-63. Then over the weekend, Jones successfully defended his title by going 66-63, prevailing on a leaderboard which featured five-time PGA Tour winner Ben Crane and two-time PGA Tour champ Ted Potter Jr.

In the final round, Jones made 10 birdies and one bogey to prevail by two over Willie Mack III, by three over Crane and by four over Potter.

Overall for the 36-hole event, Jones racked up a whopping 18 birdies. A 50 percent birdie conversion rate is not too shabby, but he was even more impressive last year in this event, with two eagles and 16 birdies.

Sunday’s victory was worth $5,000 for the 24-year-old.

Since turning pro, besides playing in mini-tour events, Jones has teed it up in one PGA Tour event and two Korn Ferry Tour tournaments, making the cut in one start at each level.

As an amateur, besides sweeping the CGA’s open-age majors in 2022, Jones won the season-long national Elite Amateur Series in 2024, he advanced to the round of 32 at the 2023 U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills Country Club, and he was runner-up in a playoff in the 2022 Trans-Miss at Denver Country Club.
