Cougars Hitting Stride

In one of three spring college tournaments Pueblo is hosting, 2024 DII national champs Colorado Christian University men claim title at The Sam Proal at Pueblo CC; CCU’s Peyton Jones earns third individual victory of season

The great majority of college golf tournaments played in Colorado take place during the fall portion of the schedule, with nine such events having been contested this season.

But when it comes to spring-season college events in the Centennial State, Pueblo rules the roost this season.

Last week, it wrapped up the women’s CSU Pueblo Southern Colorado Open, which the home team won by five strokes at Walking Stick. CSU Pueblo’s Lisa Ekberg and Texas A&M International’s Margret Nyamukondiwa tied for the individual title.

This week, it was the men’s turn with The Sam Proal at Pueblo Country Club. Colorado Christian University men’s team, NCAA Division II national champions in 2024 and national runner-up in 2025, beat five teams ranked higher in the national polls and claimed the team title by eight over host CSU Pueblo. The Cougars, ranked 31st in DII, finished at 11 under par for three rounds.

Colorado School of Mines finished fourth in the 18-team field, while Fort Lews was ninth and Colorado Mesa 10th.

Individually. Colorado Christian senior Peyton Jones prevailed by one over CSU Pueblo’s Marius Dosiere for the victory, while CSU Pueblo’s Callum Kenneally tied for third and CCU’s Lance Christensen Jr. placed fifth. 

Jones went 68-65-70 for a 10-under-par total. It was his third individual victory of the season for the Roswell, N.M., product.

Colorado Christian’s next tournament will be the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, where the Cougars will try to earn a third straight conference crown. It’s scheduled for April 19-21 in Boulder City, Nev.

College golf will return to Pueblo when a women’s NCAA Division II super regional will be contested at Pueblo Country Club May 4-6.

Also on tap concerning college golf in Colorado this spring, the Colorado Mesa University women will host the Maverick Challenge at Redlands Mesa Golf Course in Grand Junction April 11-12.
